Holly Springs National Forest encompasses much of this north Mississippi landscape, where the headwaters of the Yocona River are fed by numerous local creeks such as Kettle Cr and Wolf Cr. Small rural settlements and family landmarks are the defining characteristic of this area, centered around the community of Denmark and the neighboring locale of Lafayette Springs. The geography is shaped by the river valley to the south and a network of minor lakes including Goolsby Lake and Midway Lake. Genealogy researchers will find several well-defined burial grounds across the terrain, from Lafayette Springs Cem near the eastern boundary to Bluff Springs Cem and Springdale Cem, which serve as quiet markers of the region's established families and long-standing hamlets like Cornish and Dogtown.
