Topatopa Mountains and their prominent high points, Topatopa Peak and Devils Heart Peak, dominate this area of the Sespe Wilderness. The landscape is defined by the steep drainage basins of the Sespe River and Sespe Creek, which flow through deep canyons such as Hot Springs Canyon and Sycamore Canyon. The presence of several named flats—including Cottriel Flat, Pigeon Flat, and Dough Flat—indicates the few level areas amidst the otherwise vertical terrain of the Los Padres National Forest. Remote springs like Sespe Hot Springs, Borracho Spring, and Dripping Springs provide vital water sources in this dry mountain environment. A network of backcountry routes, including the Sespe River Trl and Buckhorn Trl, provides the only established access through these protected lands, connecting the various flats and peaks.
