Diablo Dam and the hydro-electric settlements along the Skagit River define this corner of the North Cascades. The map shows the company towns of Newhalem and Diablo, established to support the Seattle City Light power projects. Steep verticality is evident through landmarks like Paul Bunyans Stump and the dramatic drop of Ladder Creek Falls near the powerhouse.

The high-altitude wilderness surrounding the river corridor is preserved within North Cascades National Park and the Ross Lake National Recreation Area. From the ice of Colonial Glacier and Neve Glacier to the waters of Bouck Lake, the landscape is a complex network of glacial features and drainage basins. Remote peaks such as Davis Peak and Snowfield Peak overlook the narrow valley where the Gorge Creek Bridge spans the rugged terrain above Gorge Creek Falls.
