Diagonal and the surrounding Ringgold County countryside are defined by a grid of rural roads and the winding course of the Grand River. In this 2015 survey, the landscape reveals a dense network of local history through its many small burial grounds, including the curiously named Dead Man's Curve Cem south of town and the Bohemian Cem to the east. The township is characterized by its agricultural layout, with the small settlement of Knowlton situated just north of the larger community of Diagonal.
