The Duke Mine and several other extraction sites near the Colorado-Utah border define the industrial character of this high-desert plateau. In the early 21st century, these operations—including the Packrat Group Mine, Homestead Mine, and Lucky Day Mine—clustered near the headwaters of John Brown Creek. The landscape is etched with deep drainage systems and named topography like Kirks Basin and Sinbad Ridge, which influenced the placement of primitive roads and water infrastructure.
