Sulphur River meanders across this landscape south of Texarkana, forming a complex network of oxbow lakes and wetlands along the border of Texas and Arkansas. The intricate hydrology of the river bottom is evident in the numerous named sloughs and lakes, such as Alligator Lake, Pinhook Lake, and Snaggy Lake, which dominate the southern half of the sheet. This low-lying drainage system eventually gives way to the higher ground of the Domino settlement and the community of Hoot. Local heritage is anchored by sites like Buchanan Cem and Domino Cem, while the northern portion of the quadrangle shows the suburban expansion of Texarkana. The transition from the developed road networks near Gifford Hill Lake to the dense, water-logged terrain of the Ford Islands illustrates the sharp contrast between human settlement and the resilient riverine environment of the Red River Valley region.
