Challis National Forest encompasses much of this high-elevation landscape in Custer County, characterized by a complex network of canyons and drainage systems. The terrain is defined by dramatic elevation changes, evidenced by the descent into Dead Cat Canyon and Rock Spring Canyon in the northern reaches. Water sources are critical landmarks in this environment, including the eponymous Doublespring and the secluded Carlson Lake tucked into the southeastern mountains.
