The Tenmile River valley serves as the primary corridor for settlement and industry along the New York and Connecticut border in the mid-20th century. The village of Dover Plains sits at the northern end of this reach, where the Stone Church Brook descends from the heights of Chestnut Ridge near the geologic landmark of The Stone Church. To the south, the Swamp River and Tenmile River converge near Wingdale, an area dominated by the extensive grounds of the Harlem Valley State Hospital.
