The Muskingum River flows past the historic canal-era towns of Dresden and Lower Dresden at the northeastern corner of this 2010 survey. This part of Muskingum County is characterized by a dense concentration of lineage-rich sites, particularly numerous burial grounds such as the Mattingly Settlement Cemetery, Sherrods Chapel Cemetery, and Black Log Cemetery. To the west, the landscape is dominated by the sprawling waters of Dillon Lake, where Stump Run and other local tributaries converge. The rural character of the region is evident in the scattered settlements like Shannon and Stringtown, connected by a network of backroads like Redbud Rd and Prior Rd. Between the river valley and the lake, the high ground known as The Highlands offers a clear view of the area's transition from riparian lowlands to the agricultural uplands typical of central Ohio.
