The Missouri River carves the northern boundary of this landscape, marking the transition between Roosevelt Co and Richland Co. The terrain is defined by a dense network of coulees and drainage systems, including the namesake Dugout Cr and the extensive reaches of Hardscrabble Cr. These intermittent watercourses have deeply eroded the plateau, creating the distinct landforms seen at Garden Coulee and Goodman Coulee. This is a largely undeveloped region of eastern Montana, where the primary infrastructure consists of rural routes like Co RD 152 and Co RD 332. The map illustrates the geometric precision of the Public Land Survey System, with township boundaries for t27n r55e and t27n r56e overlaying the complex physical geography of the breaks near the river.
