Sand Mountain dominates the western half of this DeKalb County landscape, where the plateau terrain eventually drops off toward the Big Wills Valley. The area is defined by a series of distinct gaps and ridges, such as Whiteoak Gap, Hammond Gap, and Shinbone Ridge, which have historically dictated the placement of roads and settlements. Near the northern edge, the community of Henagar sits atop the plateau, while the city of Fort Payne occupies the valley floor to the south.
