Sand Mountain dominates the western half of this DeKalb County landscape, where agriculture and small settlements like Henagar and New Home are concentrated on the broad, flat plateau. The eastern half of the map drops sharply into the parallel corridors of Sand Valley and Big Wills Valley, creating a dramatic ridge-and-valley topography. This geological structure dictated the path of regional infrastructure, with major roads and the Railroad Valley corridor following the low ground beneath the steep slopes of Shinbone Ridge and Big Ridge.
