The historic Butterfield Trl cuts across the arid landscape of southwestern New Mexico, marking a significant corridor of western migration and transport through the high desert. This 2017 survey details the topographical meeting point of Grant and Luna counties, where the perennial drainage of the Mimbres River barely touches the northwestern corner of the quadrangle. The terrain is dominated by the southern reaches of the Cookes Range and the isolated peak of Round Mtn, which rises above a network of significant canyons and draws including Montezuma Canyon and Provinger Canyon. A sparse network of county roads like Co RD a012 provides the primary modern access to this largely uninhabited area, following the natural contours of the desert floor between the northern uplands and the wide basins of Butterfield Draw and Porter Draw.
