The Missouri River carves a deep, winding path through this Chouteau County landscape, protected as part of the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. This 2024 survey documents the dramatic transition from the plateau down into the breaks, where seasonal drainages like Butcher Knife Canyon and Sherry Coulee cut through the high plains. The terrain is dominated by the prominent Eagle Buttes to the northeast, rising above the river corridor.
