Great Salt Lake and the marshy expanse of Bear River Bay dominate the eastern half of this landscape, where the waters meet the foot of the Promontory Mountains. The settlement of East Promontory sits near the head of Messix Canyon, serving as a focal point for the surrounding network of desert springs. This area’s survival and utility are defined by these scattered water sources, such as Sweetwater Spring, Mountain Springs, and Chokecherry Spring, which emerge along the mountain slopes and within the draws of Chokecherry Canyon and Miller Canyon.
