About this map

The Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge and surrounding Mud Flat terrain dominate the southern extent of this 1966 topographic study in Box Elder County. To the west, the steep slopes of the Promontory Mountains rise abruptly, incised by a series of drainages including Big Canyon, Davis Canyon, and South Canyon. This transition from mountain range to marshland is a defining characteristic of the eastern Great Salt Lake basin, where fresh water from Blue Creek meets the alkaline flats.
