Cowlitz Prairie and Layton Prairie form the structural heart of this landscape, reflecting the characteristic flat terrace topography of the western Cascades. The Cowlitz River winds through the northern section, fed by numerous tributaries including Blue Cr and Skook Cr. The area is defined by its transition from these open prairie lands into the more dissected timberlands to the south and east, where the drainage networks of Cedar Cr and Salmon Cr have carved more intricate terrain.
