1956 Map of Elevenmile Canyon

About this map

Family-named ranches and mountain gulches define this mid-century survey of the Colorado high country, where the South Platte River enters the narrow Elevenmile Canyon Reservoir. The landscape is a network of working lands and seasonal retreats, from the Hartsel Ranch in the southwest to the Abell Ranch in the north. Settlement is scattered, evidenced by the Sch near Link Creek and various summer residences such as the Sleeping Tom Summer Homes and Camp Alexander. Industry is represented by a Strip Mine and associated Tailings in the northeast, while the eastern portion of the map is dominated by the Pike National Forest. The complex drainage system, including Wagon Tongue Creek and Sledge Hammer Gulch, illustrates the transition from the high-altitude Pumpkin Hills down toward the reservoir's shoreline.
