About this map

The Old Santa Fe Trail cuts through the High Plains landscape of Morton County, marking a historic corridor of western expansion that follows the natural path of the Cimarron River. By the early 1970s, this region had become defined by an intensive energy extraction economy, with the Oil and Gas Field and numerous Gas Wells and Oil Wells peppered across the townships of Richfield and Taloga. The river itself is flanked by industrial activity, including Gravel Pits and various water sources such as a Flowing Well and a Ford near the junction of the North Fork. This survey documents a transition where ancient pioneer trails and modern resource development occupy the same southwestern Kansas terrain.
