Custer National Forest and the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness define this high-elevation landscape along the boundary of Stillwater and Carbon counties. The topography is dominated by the Beartooth Mountains, featuring the broad Fishtail Plateau and the steep walls of Black Canyon. A complex network of alpine hydrology feeds into the valleys, including Emerald Lake and West Rosebud Lake at the southern end, while the northern slopes are drained by the multiple forks of Fishtail Creek and Fiddler Creek.
