Emerick Bench and the high northern plains of Phillips County define this portion of the Montana landscape. The terrain is deeply inscribed by a complex network of ephemeral drainages, including Woody Island Coulee and Black Coulee in the north, and Alkali Coulee and Joiner Coulee in the south. These coulees represent the primary topographic relief in an area otherwise characterized by sweeping plateaus and isolated high points like Haystack Butte.
