Mining operations and dry lake beds define this desert landscape in the Mojave. The eastern portion of the sheet is dominated by the Marine Corps Combat Center, which encompasses the broad expanse of Emerson Lake. Outside the military boundary, the terrain is marked by mineral exploration, with several small-scale workings situated in the rocky uplands. Prospectors and local historians can find evidence of these efforts at the Blue Ribbon Mine and the Los Padres Mine, as well as numerous isolated Shafts and Prospects. The presence of Means Lake and a few scattered Wells suggests the critical importance of water sources in this arid environment, providing a detailed record of the infrastructure supporting both defense and industry in mid-century San Bernardino County.
