The Rat Root River meanders across this northern Minnesota landscape, carving a serpentine path through the low-lying wetlands of Koochiching County. The terrain is defined by its water systems, including the isolated Moose Lake and the southern Beaver Brook. While much of the area remains dominated by natural features, human infrastructure is present through the east-west corridor of Mn-217 and the north-south reach of Galvin Rd. This 2013 survey illustrates the characteristic drainage patterns and high-water table typical of this region near the Canadian border, showing how transportation routes are carefully placed to navigate the surrounding marsh and river plains.
