The complex shoreline of Arcata Bay and the industrial waterfront of Eureka anchor this late 1950s survey of the Humboldt coast. The city of Eureka is shown in detail, including the St Josephs Hosp, Sequoia Park, and the extensive Northwestern Pacific Railroad lines servicing the harbor. To the north, Arcata centers around Humboldt State College and is connected to the southern settlements by the Northwestern Pacific Railroad tracks that skirt the bay.

Industry and transport infrastructure are prominent throughout the landscape, from the Arcata Airport and Eureka Airport to the numerous sloughs like Fay Slough and Freshwater Slough that drain the timbered uplands. Small communities such as Samoa and Manila sit on the narrow sand spit separating the bay from the Pacific, while inland, the Mad River meanders toward the coast near Tyee City and McKinleyville.
