The Musselshell River carves a winding path along the boundary of Petroleum and Garfield counties, defining a landscape of deep drainage basins and remote ranchlands. Near the center of the sheet, the namesake Fail Ranch occupies a high point overlooking the intricate network of coulees that feed into the river system. This 2014 survey documents the industrial footprint of energy extraction in the region, particularly at the West Dome Cat Creek Oil Field and the Mosby Dome Cat Creek Oil Field. These sites, along with a series of local access routes like River RD and Sage LN, illustrate the persistent human activity within a terrain dominated by erosional features such as Long Coulee and Jackson Coulee. The presence of the MT-200 highway in the southern corner provides the primary modern link between these isolated central Montana holdings and the wider region.
