Fairburn serves as the primary hub in this corner of Custer County, situated where the high plains meet the intricate drainages of the southern Black Hills foothills. The town's grid is small but defined by 1st St, 2nd St, and 3rd St, located just south of the intersection with Co Hwy 719. Outside of the settlement, the landscape is defined by a network of seasonal watercourses and rural ranching roads. French Cr and its tributary, S Fork French Cr, wind through the southern sections, while Dry Cr cuts across the northern reaches. The local history of the community is anchored by the Fairburn Cem located just east of the main town site. This 2017 survey reflects a modern view of a traditional western landscape, where movement is dictated by the terrain following routes like Co Hwy 18 and Ranch Rd.
