Fairport sits at the northern edge of this maritime-focused survey, representing the southernmost settlement on Michigan's Garden Peninsula. The landscape is dominated by a chain of islands extending southward into the waters where Lake Michigan meets Green Bay. These landmasses, including Summer Island, Little Summer Island, and the more distant Poverty Island, create a complex network of navigable channels such as the Poverty Island Passage.
