1904 Map of Fayetteville

USGS Topo · Published 1904

About this map

Fayetteville and the surrounding townships of Northwest Arkansas appear here at the turn of the century, still heavily defined by the legacies of the Civil War and a developing rail economy. In the northern reaches of Benton County, the Pea Ridge Battlefield and Elkhorn Tavern mark a landscape of ridges and hollows near the Missouri line. The map captures the region's connectivity through the Kansas City Southern Ry and the St. Louis and San Francisco RR, including the Bentonville Branch and St. Paul Branch. Rural industry and river transit are visible at Rhea's Mill and where the Vanwinkle Ferry crosses the White River. Numerous natural springs, such as Elm Springs and Silver Springs, anchor early settlements and crossroads across the plateau.
