The Humboldt Range dominates this late-twentieth-century landscape, dropping steeply eastward into the wide Buena Vista Valley. The area is defined by its extraction history, evidenced by a concentration of mining features in the southern reaches including the Hollywood Mine, a Mine Shaft, and various adits. These operations were strategically located near the rugged drainage of Cow Canyon, where the elevation shifts from the high peaks toward the basin floor.
