Five Buttes and a series of prominent volcanic landforms dominate this high-desert landscape in Navajo County. The terrain transitions from the high Malpais Mesa in the northwest down into the broad Pueblo Colorado Valley to the east. Historically critical water sources are distributed across this arid environment, including Shonto Spring, Malpais Spring, and Round Butte Spring, which likely served as vital stopovers for travelers and livestock alike.
