Dead Mans Hill rises above a highly dissected landscape of the northern Missouri River breaks region, where the Phillips and Valley County line marks a remote stretch of eastern Montana. The map is defined by an intricate network of drainages and coulees, including Flat Coulee, Box Elder Coulee, and Coal Bank Coulee, which carve through the high prairie. These intermittent watercourses, such as South Fork Box Elder Coulee and Larb Creek, illustrate the complex erosion patterns characteristic of the high plains before they reach the larger river systems. A limited network of gravel and ranch roads, including Fisher Rd and S Bench Rd, provides the only modern infrastructure in this expansive grazing territory, following the higher ground between deep draws like Blanche Coulee.
