Industrial and agricultural development define this Inland Empire landscape just before the mid-century boom. The rigid grid of the Fontana and Bloomington areas is bisected by a dense network of competing rail lines, including the Pacific Electric, Southern Pacific, and the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe. To the south, the Jurupa Mountains rise abruptly, separating the growing valley settlements from the heavy industry near the Santa Ana River.
