The Missouri River floodplain and its carved blufflands dominate this section of Holt and Andrew counties. The small settlement of Forbes sits at the base of the loess hills where Forbes Cr emerges into the wide alluvial expanse of Burr Oak Bottom. This area shows a distinct contrast between the flat, levee-protected agricultural lands to the south and the deeply dissected timber and creek valleys to the north, including Barrett Hollow and Hicks Hollow.
