1964 Map of Fort Connah

About this map

The Fort Connah (Site) serves as a focal point for this 1964 survey of the Flathead Indian Reservation, marking the location of the historic Hudson's Bay Company trading post. The landscape is defined by an extensive network of irrigation infrastructure, including the Mission Canal, Lateral B Canal, and the Kicking Horse Feeder Canal, which coordinate water flow between major bodies like Kicking Horse Reservoir and Ninepipe Reservoir. These man-made water systems supported the agricultural settlements and small communities such as Allentown and Post Creek that dot the valley floor below the dramatic ascent to Eagle Pass. Much of the western portion is dedicated to the Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge, where complex wetland patterns indicate the area's importance for migratory waterfowl. The presence of the Leon Community Center and several gravel pits along the primary north-south route of highway 93 illustrates the mid-century social and industrial footprint within this tribal territory.
