Fort Rice and the tiny settlement of Livona occupy the banks of the Missouri River in this riverine landscape south of Bismarck. The area is defined by the expansive waters of Lake Oahe, which fills the valley floor and forms Badger Bay near the southern boundary. Steep breaks and coulees rise from the shoreline, leading to prominent landmarks like Potato Hill and Corner Butte.
