Lake Maumelle and the surrounding highlands of the Ouachita Mountains define this area northwest of Little Rock. The landscape is a complex network of peaks and drainage basins, where the Maumelle River and Little Maumelle River flow through valleys separated by prominent landmarks like Pigeon Roost Mtn and Crystal Mtn. To the south, the terrain descends toward the North Fork Saline River, illustrating the continental divide between the Arkansas and Ouachita river watersheds.
