New Franklin and the older riverside site of Franklin anchor the southeastern corner of this Missouri river valley landscape, where the floodplain meets a complex network of hills and creek drainages. The topography is defined by the winding course of Sulphur Cr and its tributaries, including W Fork Sulphur Cr and E Fork Sulphur Cr, which carve through the central terrain. To the northwest, the small settlement of Boonesboro sits among numerous named branches and creeks such as Coopers Cr and Dry Fork.
