The Neches River carves a winding path through this landscape, creating a complex network of oxbow lakes, sloughs, and bends that define the riverine character of Jasper County. This environment is characterized by distinctive features such as Old Stove Bend, Cocklebur Bend, and Pearl River Bend, where the shifting waters have left behind numerous bodies of water like Franklin Lake and Pool Stave Camp Lake. Much of the western and central territory is protected as part of the Big Thicket National Preserve, an area where natural river processes remain largely undisturbed.
