Freemound sits at the center of a landscape defined by water management and energy extraction in Cooke County. The terrain is dominated by the upper reaches of the Elm Fork Trinity River and a sophisticated network of flood control structures, including Soil Conservation Service Site 61d Dam and Soil Conservation Service Site 19 Dam. These numerous dams protect the drainage basins of Clear Creek, Blocker Creek, and Williams Creek, reflecting twentieth-century efforts to stabilize the North Texas watershed.
