Klamath River flows through the northeastern corner of this Humboldt County terrain, passing Kanick Rapids and the historic Martins Ferry (Site). The river serves as a natural corridor between the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation and the high ridges to the west. The landscape is defined by a series of distinct upland flats, including Big Prairie, Shelton Prairie, and Wiregrass Prairie, which stand in contrast to the steep drainage systems of Tully Creek and Roach Creek.
