The town of Frostburg serves as a regional hub, anchored by the Frostburg State Teachers College and the intersection of the historic National Road with the Western Maryland railroad lines.

Evidence of the region's extraction economy is visible in the numerous strip mines and the settlement of Eckhart Mines. Smaller communities like Grahamtown, Zihlman, and Clarysville are clustered along the drainage of Georges Creek and Braddock Run. To the west, the landscape rises toward Savage Mountain, where remote landmarks such as Emmanuel Ch and the Johnston Sch stand near the headwaters of the Savage River.
