The mountain settlement of Gilbert sits at the confluence of several high-altitude drainages, serving as a focal point for this 2017 survey of the North Cascades. The landscape is defined by the headwaters of the Twisp River, where the N Fork Twisp River and S Fork Twisp River emerge from steep glacial basins. A legacy of mineral exploration is visible at the Crescent Mine on the slopes of Crescent Mtn, while the surrounding territory is managed as the Okanogan National Forest. Notable peaks such as Abernathy Peak and Reynolds Peak dominate the skyline, marking the rugged divide between the Twisp drainage and the Lake Chelan National Recreation Area to the southwest. The presence of numerous alpine water bodies, including Louis Lake and Abernathy Lake, highlights the glaciated nature of this high-country terrain near the Okanogan and Chelan county line.
