Gilmer serves as the primary hub of this East Texas landscape, where the town’s residential grid is bounded by the historic Cherokee Trce to the north. The area is defined by a series of low peaks including Simpson Mountain, McDonald Mountain, and Underwood Mountain, which rise above a network of creek drainages like Sugar Creek and Glade Creek. Smaller settlements and communities such as Enoch, Piedmont, and Mings Chapel are connected by a web of rural routes named for local flora, including Black Walnut Rd, Chinaberry Rd, and Cherry Laurel Rd.
