Goodwater and Shinewell represent the primary settlements in this corner of McCurtain County, where the bottomlands of the Little River meet the rising terrain of the Ouachita National Forest. The landscape is defined by its complex hydrology, featuring numerous winding waterways like Mountain Fork, Crooked Cr, and Panki Bok Cr, alongside still waters such as Grassy Lake and Forked Lake. Much of this wetland ecosystem is preserved within the Little River National Wildlife Refuge.
