Peters Mountain and Stony Mountain dominate this landscape on the border of Dauphin and Lebanon counties, where the ridges of the Appalachian chain run in parallel bands. Much of the northern terrain is dedicated to the public trust, including State Game Lands No 210 and State Game Lands No 211. The topography is defined by narrow gaps and water gaps, most notably Manada Gap, which serves as a natural corridor for movement through the steep ridges.

Military and recreational land uses coexist across these valleys. Significant portions of the southern slopes fall within the Fort Indiantown Gap Military Reservation and the Cold Spring Mil Res. Below the mountains, the landscape opens into the developed corridors of East Hanover and West Hanover, featuring landmarks such as the Penn National Race Course and the village of Grantville near Interchange 28. The Appalachian Trail winds along the high ridges, overlooking the sprawling De Hart Reservoir tucked into the valley of Clark Creek.
