Crowleys Ridge dominates the center of this landscape, creating a narrow band of elevated, complex terrain that stands in stark contrast to the surrounding flat alluvial plains. This geological formation serves as a natural divide between the drainage systems of the L'Anguille River to the southwest and the managed agricultural ditches to the east, including the Main Spoil Bank Ditch and Viney Slough.

The settlement of Greenfield is situated along the Missouri Pacific railroad corridor, which follows the base of the ridge. Rural life in the late twentieth century is evidenced by a network of community institutions such as Central High Sch, Alsap Ch, and Mt Pisgah Ch. Several family and community burial grounds, including White Cem and Willis Cem, are positioned along the slopes and fingers of the ridge, while the lowlands are defined by an extensive system of flumes, levees, and laterals like the Mulligan Lateral.
