About this map

The industrial and agricultural landscape of Washington County comes into sharp focus through the extensive coal mining and gas extraction infrastructure found here in the early 1950s. The dominance of the coal industry is evident in the presence of Bethlehem Collieries Mine No 60 and the Thomas Shaft near Thomas, which, along with the Thomas Tunnel, indicate a complex subterranean network beneath the surface hills. These operations are tied to the Baltimore and Ohio railroad corridor that serves the northern settlements.
