McCann Lake and Hansen Lake sit at the center of a wide interior drainage basin in Wyoming’s high desert, surrounded by the expansive alkali deposits of Chain Lakes Flat. This landscape is defined by its subtle depressions and high ridges, notably the Chain Lakes Rim which overlooks the flats from the southeast. To the west, the ground rises toward Battle Spring Flat and the distinct elevation of Coal Butte. Human infrastructure is sparse, limited to the industrial and access routes of the Wamsutter Crooks Gap Rd and Co Rd 23. This 2021 survey demonstrates the persistent isolation of the Great Divide Basin, where water is seasonal and the topography dictates the paths of travel through the Sweetwater County sagebrush.
