
Palo Duro Canyon dominates the southern portion of this landscape, where the Prairie Dog Town Fork Red River has carved a complex network of breaks and draws across the boundary of Armstrong and Briscoe counties. The terrain is defined by its dramatic drainage systems, including the namesake Hardscrabble Cr, which winds through the center of the sheet toward the canyon floor. Above the rim, the landscape opens into distinct upland areas such as Cactus Park and Mitchell Park, providing a stark contrast to the deep incisions of the river system below.
