Hartland sits at the center of this 2014 survey, where the prairie grid of Ward County meets the winding course of the Des Lacs River. The landscape is defined by deep incisions in the plain, most notably Goettle Coulee and Carl Feldner Coulee, which drain toward the river valley to the northeast. These coulees create a striking contrast against the regular sections of agricultural land, which are marked by rural roads like 156th Ave NW and 142nd Ave NW. Genealogy and local history are preserved at several remote sites, including Saint Anthony Cem in the northwest corner and Zion Cem near the townsite. The inclusion of Skinningsrud Airport in the southeast quadrant reflects the modern utility of these wide-open spaces, even as the boundary between Ward and Renville Counties maintains the traditional political geography of the region.
